My mother told me not to eat the offerings we put to my grandfather on the Day of the Dead because if I do eat he would come at night and grab my legs. I didn’t believe it and I secretly ate some pastry from the altar. That night I was woken by my grandfather’s spirit. He was very angry and scolded me. I prayed the Lord of the Wonders, and little by little the spirit disappeared. For that I promise not to be so naughty and gluttonous.

Thanks to you I could escape from my old lady who wanted to beat me. I just said that her food lacked salt, and she went mad. Thanks, Virgin of Guadalupe.

When he was preparing chicharones, a badass cat fell into the vat. He pulled him out well fried. He thanks Saint James for his customers didn’t notice it and, on the contrary, told him it was more delicious.

I was in despair because my dishes always turned out horrible because I didn’t know how to cook. I asked Saint Paschal Baylon for help. Now my husband is very happy with my food, and he even bought me new pans and pots. Now my dishes come out very delicious, and I give thanks for that.

My husband changed for the worse. He began to visit bars and ladies of easy virtue. I was afraid to lose him, so I prayed to the Virgin so that he wouldn’t go a bad path. Finally I had an idea. I said to him that if he’d continue to behave naughty, I would not cook for him anymore. And I cook really good. He thought it over and broke off his bad habits. I thank the Virgin of San Juan.

It happened with Cayetana Rodriguez, when she was making tortillas and was sitting naked, a rat climbed on her breast and bit her tit. She fervently thanks Saint Paschal for her titty was healed.

I didn’t expect to inherit small corn fields after one of my distant uncle’s death. But my mother gave me an idea to sell sweet corn on the streets. I thank Saint Martin the Cavalryman because the sales are going well and I’m much better as a vendor than as a farmer.

Felipe Carrion ~ Iztapalapa, Mexico City

One day when I was cooking, I took off and started floating in the air. I managed to come down only some time later. I was afraid and prayed to Saint Paschal because I continued to fly every day. Finally the saint made me understand that it was caused by quesadillas with mushrooms that I loved so much and ate frequently. Now, when I stopped eating them, everything is back to normal. I thank the Saint because it’s hard to cook while flying.

My husband liked to eat in bed while watching TV. It bothered me a lot because he left crumbs and left-overs on the sheets. One warm night we left the window open and a lot of squirrels came to our room. They started to eat the left-overs. I was nervous and began to scream like crazy. My husband chased the squirrels away and closed the window. I thank the Virgin of Zapopan because my husband stopped eating in bed after that. And now is very comfortable to sleep without crumbs.

I, Montse Rios, give infinite thanks to the Souls for possessing my cat and telling me that the pie I cooked for my boyfriend Hector was burning.

Tavern “Delicious fatty”

I dedicate this retablo as a sign of gratitude to Saint Paschal Baylon for giving my dishes the right taste and for a pretty waitress for the benefit of my tavern.

I’m a terrible cook. That’s why my mama used to say I’d never get married. But thanks to Saint Paschal I found a husband who cooks marvelously. He adores cooking, and it is his passion. He prepares delicious dishes for me and our kids. I thank Saint Paschal, the patron of cooks.
