I was washing the clothes in the river, when one of my shirt was taken by the current. I rushed to catch it, but the current was so strong, that I was carried down to the waterfall [...] I hit the rocks, but thanks to the Virgin of Guadalupe I managed to get out the water [...] I thank the Virgin because now I’m getting better.

Lucia Martinez bought a new dress and her first high heeled shoes. She dressed up and went with her little brother to the town square so that all the boys could admire her. But when she was going up the stairs one heel got stuck in the crack and she fell on her back. Lucia gives thanks for she didn’t fall on her brother, nor the dog. Although the stairs were high, Luisa didn’t hurt herself either. She only bruised her elbow. She gives special thanks because the heel didn’t break.

I dedicate this retablo to the Infant Jesus of Prague. I always wanted to have an Italian costume to honor my ancestors. Finally I found one at a garage sale. And now I proudly wear it in every possible occasion.

I thanks Saint Mary of the Head because, although I was born as a man, she gave me necessary strength to decide to inject hormones and to wear woman clothes, pretty much against my family wishes and especially my brothers’ will.

I wanted to go to the Town Day celebration, so early at the morning, when even the sun had not yet arisen, I went to the river wash my clothes. There I met a nagual with long sharp claws. He went towards me. I thank the Virgin of Guadalupe [. . .]

The demon played a bad joke on me and my daughter. He made small pieces of coal fall on our clothes and put it on fire. But thanks to the Holy Cross we managed to put out the fire. We thank for that.

Blasa Jimenez thanks Saint Anthony because she met an old rich womanizer. Now she has the best dresses and jewelry in the town.

One night I heard strange noise on the roof. I was scared that it might be thieves. I peeped out the staircase window. To my surprise, and to my fear, it were extraterrestrials. They were taking my family’s clothes. I prayed to the Virgin so that the martians wouldn’t notice me or my sleeping baby and so that my husband would come back home. I thank the Virgin of San Juan because the extraterrestrials went away without doing any harm to us. But since we were left without clothes, I had to buy new ones — and that I very much like to do.

Sometimes I like to put women’s clothes on. I love the feeling of soft cloth on my skin, I love the shine of the jewels, the colors and the aroma of the cosmetics. And I love how it affects and transforms all my body. I thank the Virgin for an understanding wife, who has no problem with me using her clothes. Also because of that I buy her more dresses and shoes, and she knows that I have a very good taste.

With this retablo, the young man Luis Ramirez thanks Saint Martin the Cavalryman for the big success of his women’s clothing shop.

At the day of the Mariana’s wedding her fiancé didn’t come to the church, because he decided no to get married. Furious, she ran to the cape and threw herself into the sea. However, after the contact with the water, she came to her senses and she didn’t want to die anymore. But her dress got wet and heavy. It was difficult to go up, and St. Barbara came to help her. A current took Mariana and brought her up to the surface. She managed to get to the beach. She thanks for this miracle and promises not to do stupid things again, because no man is worth it.
