Alfredo and his wife Silvia and their son Daniel thank the Virgin of Guadalupe because they managed to cross the Rio Bravo without being noticed by the immigration police. They got to the U.S. and earn some bucks to support themselves. They wholeheartedly ask you to always protect them on their way.

My Holy, I pray you to thank you. You gave me strength to find justice against my abusive husband. The law didn’t help me, but you did. Bless me, Holy Death, and please keep my secret safe.

Luisa Ramos was modeling for an adult magazine, climbing on a tree. But the branch broke off, and she fell down. She thanks Saint Nicholas for she only broke her arm and will be back to her usual activities soon.

I wholeheartedly thank the Holy Child of Atocha because last year I joined the dance group Los Chinelos. I always enjoyed going out on the streets with my family and watch them, but then a friend of mine who was in the group invited me to dance with them. I gladly agreed because it’s such a colorful and fun tradition.

Infinite Thanks to Cher, because without her I may never have had the courage to be out! I knew I was a lesbian at 6, but it wasn’t until I first saw her in 1971 on the first Sonny & Cher Show that I knew at 11, I had the courage to do anything! She inspired me to come out at 13 and be proud. Not bad for a poor Housing Commission girl in 1974! I will never forget the song “Half Breed” Cher, the horse, & the sexy extravagance. No wonder I rode my motorbike through the crowd at the Palais in St. Kilda at “An Extravagant Lesbian Night” with just a g-string, a cap & a whole lot of body oil! Thank you, Cher!

A hail storm ruined the roof of the corral. I thank the Virgin of Zapopan because my husband, although very reluctantly, let the animals sleep in the house until he could repair the roof and until it won’t be so cold outside.

The great wrestler El Santo thanks the Virgin of Guadalupe for delivering him from the evil that attacked him and wanted to take him away.

The other night I was sleeping in my room with my boyfriend Gruff and suddenly felt a malign presence, like a dead goy into me. I couldn’t move or open my eyes, but I felt I was protected. I want to thank my patron saint Jesus Malverde for that because he looks after me, and moreover he worked a miracle—I received unexpected money to pay off my debts and also got a better contract at my work.

With this humble retablo, I wholeheartedly ask Saint James the Apostle not to let Don Goyo to erupt. It’s been very active in the last months. Although we are used to its flames and ashes, we are afraid it wakes up because my family and I, we live very close to it.

I, Emmanuel Espin PIneda, give thanks to God for my life and because I was planted in a beautiful garden. I hope my fruits would be good, because you are God who makes a dry tree flourish. I finished painting this exvoto in front of the Tree of Tule in Santa Maria, Oaxaca. Mexico, 2020.
